I am now including Alumni who are out there attacking life, using No Excuses, and making things happen in a positive / inspiring way…So here goes with another August installment.
I truly believe getting to know people, communicating with them, and finding out what they are about is a crucial key to successful teamwork, a successful school.
I want to present you with an unsung hero who graduated from Shepherd in 2009 and has been doing amazing things, making changes, and attacking the gift of life given to him…
The name is Noble. Tyler Noble… And get what this man is currently doing…
Tyler is currently working in Indianapolis with USA Track & Field (USATF) as the High Performance and Coaching Education Intern. He works directly with our Olympic athletes to provide support in their pursuit of their Olympic dreams. As a member of the High Performance department Tyler has had some pretty cool opportunities. The highlight of the summer was getting to spend a week in Chula Vista, California collecting data with our Olympic Throwers. Using state-of-the-art testing equipment Tyler was able to measure each thrower’s dynamic and isometric strength and power. In addition He also had the opportunity to work with Dr. Randy Wilber (Senior Physiologist for the Olympic teams) collecting salimetric data (saliva) in an effort to track changes in hormonal levels in response to training. This data is then used to alter the athlete’s training regimen. His daily duties at USA Track and Field vary greatly. He have been responsible for everything from elite athlete funding tracking, talent identification, athlete testing, and so much more.
WOW! And he is not done there…
With his internship in Indianapolis coming to a close, Mr. Noble decided to take the next step. He just recently accepted an internship position in Colorado Springs to work at the United States Olympic Training Center with USA Triathlon. Tyler’s role with USA Triathlon will likely be a blend of Administrative and High Performance work aimed at supporting our Olympic athletes housed in Colorado Springs.
And I bet you had no idea what he was up to… Here is how it all started.
After graduation from Shepherd, Tyler attended Saginaw Valley State University, earning a Bachelors of Exercise Physiology and Psychology with a minor in Athletic Coaching. He worked as a teaching assistant in the Human Performance Lab where he helped to teach the lab sections of Exercise Physiology and Functional Anatomy (That just hurt my brain thinking about that class!). Tyler told me a huge perk to working as a teaching assistant was learning the “ins and outs” of athlete testing, which was something that really came in handy later on down the road.
And you want to talk about project based learning? Check out what he did! In addition to working as a TA, Tyler helped to implement a running program in elementary schools in Saginaw County. The program is called Kids Run the Nation and was developed to help grow the sport of distance running while combating childhood obesity. The program features a 10 week course where kids are taught everything from proper running form to proper nutrition while running over 100 miles. The program ends with a mile race. The program has been a huge success in Saginaw county. Tyler and his crew started in one school his first year and finished with 7-8 schools participating by the time he left.
He did find some time for himself and got involved with extra curriculars. Here is what he did. Tyler ran cross-country/track and field for SVSU from 2009-2014. It was a great experience that solidified his desire to work within the sport. The highlight was competing at the 2010 USATF Junior National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa where he placed 12th in the 10,000 meters.
In addition to athletics, he also spent time trying to expand his knowledge of the sport. Mr. Noble currently holds USA Track & Field Level 2 coaching certifications in the Endurance events as well as the Sprints/Hurdles/Relays events. He holds a USTFCCCA Endurance Specialist certification as well and is currently working towards obtaining his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification, hopefully finishing by November.
Busy? Yup! Amazing...
He next step is he hopes to attend Indiana University in the Fall of 2015 to pursue a Doctorate in Applied Sports Science
And I had to get him back to those Shepherd roots...
T said the best part about being from Shepherd “is the small town feel. It was never something that I fully appreciated until I moved to Downtown Indianapolis. Don’t get me wrong, the city is great, but Shepherd is small enough to where the people take a genuine interest in each other. The support system that grows out of that is something that you don’t get to experience anywhere else.”
“My favorite Shepherd memory was was being a part of the 2008 State Championship Cross Country team. Prior to our state championship run in ‘08, Shepherd was in the midst of a 31 year state championship drought on the men’s side. We were able to put an end to that drought by really coming together as a team and executing on race day. Thinking about it still gives me goosebumps!”
Tyler comes from a strong family background. His dad, Gary, is a Farmer, and Tyler did not hesitate to say, “I still haven’t met anyone with his work ethic and attention to detail. And I’ve worked with Olympians.” His Mom, Suzanne, works at Morbark, and by far is his biggest fan and supporter. And then there is his sister, Natalie. Tyler smiled and said, “The brains of the family/Crazy cat lady-I’m excited to see what she has to offer the world!” Gotta love her! Rounding out this amazing family is Missy, Australian Shepherd dog who Tyler said is basically my 2nd sister, and a LOT of cats!
Tyler enjoys Running, Reading, Sports, Kayaking, Hiking, Traveling, etc…. anything other than sitting still!
I asked about his Claim to Fame. “Besides being Natalie’s brother, my claim to fame would have to be that I recorded the highest Vo2 max score ever recorded in the HPL at SVSU. Vo2 max is a measure of aerobic (cardiovascular) fitness. The kinesiology department at SVSU let me keep the mesh tank top worn during the test as some sort of trophy.”
Even Tyler’s sweaty old shirt has now become famous!
Asking him who is someone who inspires him got this response: “Rick Cahoon; I wouldn’t be half the person I am today without him, and I’m not sure Shepherd would be half the town it is without him. He puts so much time and effort into teaching and coaching and making those around him better. He’s able to provide that extra little “push” toward success that is sometimes needed, and I am very thankful for all that he has done for me.”
I could not agree more...
Tyler’s Favorite Quote to live by is “Decide what to be and go be it” -The Avett Brothers from the song “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise”. The beauty of this quote is in its simplicity. Life has such a way of causing unneeded stress. We are all guilty of getting caught up in it from time to time. I feel as though if we take a deep breath and a big step back, it can be very simple. If you have a solid direction in life and you put effort towards that, things have a way of falling into place. Decide what to be and go be it!”
Such incredible insight from such a promising young man...
In asking him if he would like to add anything, Tyler did not hesitate. “I have to give a shoutout to the entire Swain family for all they have done for me; Scott, Cindy, Robert, Tango and especially Christina. They have been my 2nd family for the better part of 2 years now. I thank them for the support they have given me in the pursuit of my dreams.”
Shepherd this community is special, plain and simple. It is because of the people, not the buildings, the land, the air… it is the people who make it the way it is. The parents raising these amazing young people, the teachers/coaches helping mold them, and the friends with the positive influence around them. Tyler Noble is a perfect example of what can happen when glowing coals are fanned…
Flames can happen...
Tyler Noble you are amazing. And Shepherd could not be prouder of you…
Keep attacking life...
