Hey There Shepherd!
Once again getting back on track with ‘Getting To Know Shepherd People”, here is the May installment and the seventh so far. Getting to know people, communicating with them, and finding out what they are about is a crucial key to successful teamwork, a successful school. I am going to continue do my best to post something about the special people involved at Shepherd Public schools the first Sunday of each month.
Today I want to present you with a real sleeper who flies low under the radar but high amongst respect with his players and staff around him…
His name is Jack Carbee is a retired teacher & coach who is currently the Varsity Girls Basketball Coach and substitute teacher here at Shepherd High School. He just cannot stay away from the educational playing field. And he is just plain awesome to be around...
Coach originally attended Cornell (IA), & Iowa State where he earned BA & MS degrees. Throughout his career he taught English and Physical education.
Coach Carbee has been at SHS for three years and has been coordinating and implementing all aspects of the girls basketball program along with truly inspiring some great young ladies.
When asked what he enjoys most about being at Shepherd, Coach replied, “Simple. The students and faculty.”
When not coaching, Jack is with his family, Julie who is an office manager, and their four children: Jason, an urban planner in Omaha, Marie, Assistant Director MGBR and assistant girls basketball coach here at Shepherd, Christopher, who a United States Navy Special Ops currently in Afghanistan, and Katie, Marketing director for German manufacturer ITEM. And please do not forget the furry family member, Fleah. Woof!
Coach enjoys writing fiction works, playing golf and tennis, working crossword puzzles and Sudokus, and keeping in shape by working out.
Coach Jack Carbee has two unique claims to fame. He is a published author and he has over 500 wins as a varsity coach! Pretty impressive coach!
When I asked who inspires him, Jack stated, “Bill Bradley… a great athlete with a great brain.”
To get a true perspective on Coach Jack, I might have snuck around and chatted with a player or two concerning him. Here is what Hannah Yesmunt & Taylor Cole had to say…
Hannah:
“He absolutely lives for defense! Coach can always be heard, “Defense! Defense! Defense! There is nothing more fun then getting a team frustrated by good defense... By the end of the game you want them to HATE YOUR GUTS because you just wouldn't leave them alone"
She also smirked with Coach’s saying, “Don't hope the ball up there, shoot it!”
Whenever anyone gets hurt.... He says, "Point to your heart, and now tell me what is closer to you. Your heart or whatever hurts!"
Hannah remembered Coach encouraging, "Shooters shoot" and, "If we win or lose right now it doesn't necessarily matter. We are working together to get ready for the tournament"
Taylor:
“To me, Coach Carbee is one of the most successful coaches I know. He knows the game better than just about anybody, and his ability to teach it and win games is awesome. His love for the game and for coaching is not common, and anyone who has ever been a part of his team is lucky. Carbee also taught me a lot during my two years with him as my basketball coach. Being the best I can be for the benefit of everyone is huge with him. He preaches hard work is necessary to become successful and good things take time.
I have never had a basketball coach like Carbee, and most people never get the chance in the first place. There are just some people who stay with you after you move on from high school. He is one of them. Even after graduating I still go to him for advice and support. His influence reaches much farther than the basketball court. I am extremely lucky to have had him as a coach.
Anything else let me know, I can brag about him all day.. He's my favorite”
Student & player words speak volumes. All you have to do is listen to them and see the look in their eyes when they talk about Coach Jack Carbee…
Coach is here at Shepherd for the right reasons… he loves helping the students be the best they can be… and just talk to him and see his expressions… he loves doing it…
Thank you Coach Jack for all the hard work and dedication you bring to your profession. We are so very lucky to have you here at Shepherd High School.
Remember, I am going to do my best to post something about the special people involved at Shepherd Public schools. Look for it the first Sunday of each month.
