Hey There Shepherd!
Good Morning! Sticking to the plan for this 1st Sunday post, but as usual doing what I want to do, I am throwing in a bit of a curve ball today… This has always been ‘Getting To Know Shepherd People” and focused on those currently here at Shepherd Public Schools…
I’m expanding that…
I am now including Alumni who are out there attacking life and making things happen in a positive / inspiring way…
So… once again getting back on track with ‘Getting To Know Shepherd People” Here is the July installment. If you missed the first, you can go to:

to get caught up. Getting to know people, communicating with them, and finding out what they are about is a crucial key to successful teamwork, a successful school. I am going to continue to do my best to post something about the special people involved with Shepherd Public schools the first Sunday of each month.
So to go along with celebrating Independence Day and honor those who have served us so devotedly, today I want to present you with an unsung hero, Erin Elizabeth McLoughlin.
Erin graduated from SHS in 1999, and is currently a full time student taking
prerequisites for Veterinary School and even does Pet Sitting on the side. She has also attended University of Michigan and earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in Psychology. Erin has also been in the United States Army and traveled all over the world while doing some unique & amazing things…
This is what caught my eye about Erin.
When her FaceBook posts came up, I kept seeing her with all of these exotic animals while she was traveling in the military. It was amazing to see them so close to her and Erin so fearless next to these wild animals. A lot of this time was spent at Forever Harnas Wildlife Foundation or Wildlife Sanctuary where she was a Vet Nurse. And these were just two of the various wildlife organizations and research groups she belongs to. So much kindness and love for animals poured out of the pictures I saw of Erin while she cared for these amazing creatures...
Erin is very family-oriented and has a strong one behind her every step of her journey through life. Her family consists of her parents David & Deb, brothers Mike & Kevin, and sister, Ashley. While at home lately helping taking care of her mom (while she recovers from her knee surgery) her days are still never the same, but one thing is always in common with each of them… School and studying.
Ironic but she currently does not have any pets. Erin stated, “Honestly, I travel so much that I do not have a pet because there are times during the year when I will be gone for four months at a time, usually in a different country. I do have my own pet sitting business on the side for other people when I am not traveling.”
Reflecting back on her best part about being from Shepherd Schools she replied, “Being a part of some pretty amazing sports teams and the pep rallies including special memories of Graduation day.”
When not maintaining everything she does, Erin sometimes actually finds down time and loves to go Snowboarding, working out, playing with animals, and reading.
And check this out… Her claim to fame is a children’s book written about the work she did at the Baghdad Zoo. Erin is a main character featured as herself in 27 episodes of a wildlife documentary that is airing in Europe right now about a wildlife refuge in Namibia she worked at in 2012.
When I asked Erin who inspires her & why she replied, “My Dad. He always taught us how to work hard no matter what the circumstances in life are, and as cliche as it may sound the ‘big JC’ “.
Her favorite quote to live by comes from the movie G.I. Jane, one I love myself.
The Master Chief recites a poem from DH Lawerence:
"I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough
without ever having felt sorry for itself"
Erin finished this off when I asked if there was anything she would like to add. She replied with this:
“I truly believe that in life that we are all blessed with gifts and it is up to us to use those gifts each day to make the world around us a better place. With all of my experiences I often get asked what I think that life is all about. My conclusion I have come to is we are put on this earth to help and to love one another it is that simple.”
She finished with...
Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
It is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life.
Again, Shepherd we have some amazing people in this school system and graduates who are doing phenomenal things with this life we are all gifted with. Erin Elizabeth McLoughlin is just one perfect example how sometimes some very special people might get over-looked.
I’m trying my hardest to see it stops.
Thank you Erin for all the hard work and dedication and kindness you bring to this world. This world is a better place with you in it. It is an honor to know you..
All my best and then some...
